Premier League Team of the Month – August

The Premier League is in its fourth week and we still have three perfect teams who are yet to drop points. Liverpool, Chelsea and surprisingly Watford are leading the pack at the top of their table, and it should not come as a surprise that their players have dominated our August team of the month.

Goalkeeper- Alisson Becker

Alisson Becker is our top choice in goal after conceding just once in four outings. He let in his first goal of the season against Leicester after trying to play out from the back. This was clearly an error and an avoidable one for that matter, but that notwithstanding, it does not take away from what we have seen from the Brazilian since he made the switch to Liverpool. He is comfortable with both hands and feet, and this has given Liverpool an extra advantage when building from the back, thanks to his distribution skills. Watford’s Ben Foster and Cardiff’s Neil Etheridge have done pretty well too but for this month we will go with the Liverpool man.

Defence – Daryl Janmaat, Virgil Van Dijk, Aymeric Laporte, Marcos Alonso

Janmaat has beaten competition from Tottenham’s Kieran Trippier and Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta to make it to our list for the right-back position. He will be joined in central defence by Liverpool’s Van Dijk and Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte who have been excellent in marshalling their defences. Chelsea left-back Alonso has contributed a lot in their attack and he has been involved in their build up play as well.  He has a goal and two assists to his name while he won two penalties, thanks in part to the fact that they like to keep the ball in the opposition’s half.

Midfield – James Milner, N’Golo Kante, Naby Keita

Two of Liverpool’s current midfield three, James Milner and Naby Keita make it to our list too. The two have been playing out of their skin since the turn of the season. Milner is in the twilight years of his career and his position in the Reds midfield is not guaranteed, but he has done more than enough secure his continued selection. Keita has settled in well and his dynamism is what Jürgen Klopp had wanted for a very long time. They will be joined by Chelsea’s Kante who is adapting to a new role under Maurizio Sarri. The world Cup winner has one goal to his name and his energy is unrivalled in the English top-flight.

Strikers – Sadio Mane, Roberto Pereyra, Eden Hazard

Mane begun the season in red-hot form and he is becoming Liverpool’s go-to man for goals. He has registered four goals already in addition to bagging three Man of the Match awards. Roberto Pereyra has equally been instrumental in Watford’s brilliant start. He has been deployed alongside Troy Deeney in a front two, and together they are reminding everyone what a two-strike partnership looks like. He has scored three goals and if the game against Spurs is anything to go by, then there is more to come.

Finally Chelsea’s master of dribbling Hazard completes our list. The Belgian has managed two goals in his last two starts for Chelsea whereas he has two assists from their first two games where he was utilized from the bench.
