A look at the biggest free agents this summer

We’re over halfway through the transfer window and teams only have a limited amount of time to sign their recruits for the upcoming campaign. In addition to the eye-watering amounts that we’ve seen change hands over certain players, and the gigantic figures being touted over prospective moves, there are some far cheaper alternatives out there. Here we look at the most high-profile players who are out of contract and could be snapped up at a bargain price.

Dani Alves (last at PSG)

The veteran boasts a record number of trophies and, having departed PSG with another Ligue 1 winners’ medal, he captained Brazil to Copa America glory over the summer.

Two things are clear with the Brazilian; he only signs for the best, and he expects plenty of money to do so. His wages are a potential stumbling block in any deal, and were likely a major factor in his decision to move to Paris instead of Manchester City two years ago. As such, City and Liverpool have been rumoured as likely destinations, but a return to Barcelona should not be ruled out.

Daniel Sturridge (last at Liverpool)

Sturridge’s tenure at Anfield came to an end in June with first team opportunities looking increasingly limited. Whilst he has proven the ability to find the net throughout his career, injuries concerns continue to dog the striker, and as such would make his acquisition somewhat of a risk.

He has already represented each of England’s current top three sides so, were he to stay in the country, he would have to take a step down. Alternatively, a move abroad is not out of the question. Turkish outfit Trabzonspor have been heavily linked.

Danny Welbeck (last at Arsenal)

Welbeck leaves Arsenal after five years, during which he failed to nail down a regular place in the side. His versatility has made him a useful option for both club and country, and there is certainly a place for him at several Premier League clubs. Unfortunately, as with Sturridge, Welbeck’s injury worries are likely to dissuade potential suitors.

It is rumoured that he is seeking a £5m signing fee (and the same amount as an annual salary). Whilst this might put off some smaller teams, he has nonetheless been linked to both Everton and West Ham, two clubs that are short on strikers.

Mario Balotelli (last at Marseille)

The infamous Italian will be 29 at the start of the season and is no longer the raw talent that saw top clubs across Europe offer him opportunities. He has had stints in Italy, England and, most recently France. His best form undoubtedly came at the latter, having enjoyed his highest scoring seasons at Nice before scoring eight times in 15 league games for Marseille in the second half of the last campaign.

However, it is hard to see him at a bigger club in France than Marseille, which means he is likely to move abroad once again. A return to Italy at AS Roma has been mooted, whilst a move to the MLS is not unlikely.

Gary Cahill (last at Chelsea)

Cahill won every trophy going in seven and a half years at Chelsea and his signature would represent good business for many clubs in the Premier League. An experienced player who contributes his fair share of goals, he is likely to be only offered a one-year deal.

Due to both sides struggling in defence, Manchester United and Arsenal have been linked to the former England international. A short term contract would suit both teams, but Cahill may want a longer deal.
