Free Agents in Europe's top five leagues this summer

Free Agents Edinson Cavani

Free agents across top European leagues are pondering their next moves when their contracts expire in the summer. However there is confusion when football might resume,. Here are the Top 10 Free agents in Europe.

Free Agent: Dries Mertens (Napoli)

Dries Mertens has been impressive for Napoli in the last few seasons. The 32-year-old recently made history when he scored his 121st goal for the Partenopei. The goal meant he is now joint all-time top scorer alongside club legend Marek Hamsik. Although his career might be ending, he can still be a valuable asset for top teams in Europe. Given the confusion in if/when top leagues in Europe will be completed, Mertens remains a big free agent.

Free agents: Edinson Cavani (PSG)

Alongside Mertens, Cavani is one of the biggest free agents in the market. The Uruguayan was forced to settle as a back up to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the early years of his PSG career. However, the 33-year-old took centre stage in 2016. He has been brilliant since then although injuries have plagued him in the last few years. He scored 49 goals in 50 games followed by 40 in 47 the following campaign. Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and even Mauro Icardi have taken the spotlight and the striker will almost definitely want to move away.

Free agents: Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool)

Touted as potential starting right back for England, Nathaniel Clyne has become a forgotten man for both club and country. The meteoric rise of Trent Alexander-Arnold means Clyne needs to look for greener pastures. At 28 years old, he should be in the prime of his career playing football at the top level.

Layvin Kurzawa (PSG)

Kurzawa has failed to nail down the left back spot for PSG despite being at the club for more than four years. Injuries have not helped but he hasn’t lived up to the expectations. At 27 years of age, he is still a decent attacking fullback. He will almost certainly depart Parc de Princes when his contract runs out and there should be plenty of top teams chasing his signature.

Mario Gotze (Borussia Dortmund)

It is baffling to think that Mario Gotze is only 27 years old. Since bursting into the scene as a teenager, Gotze has had an eventful career. He controversially moved to Bayern Munich in 2013 and scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final. Injuries have definitely derailed his growth but if Dortmund consider him surplus to requirements, he could be on the move.

Pedro Rodriguez (Chelsea)

Pedro is one of the few players to have won everything in world football. A World Cup, Euro, the Champions League, Europa League and league titles, you name it. The 33-year-old who will be a free agents thus summer could be a valuable member of a young team, providing leadership and experience. His native Spain looks like a likely destination when his contract runs out.

Ever Banega (Sevilla)

The Argentine is set to leave Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan for the second time in his career. The last time his contract ran down, he moved to Inter Milan in 2016. The creative midfielder has vast experience in La Liga and could be an important addition for any team.

Willian (Chelsea)

Willian has been a key part of Chelsea’s success in the last few years. However, he might be tempted by a change of scenery when his contract ends. The 31-year-old rejected a two-year extension from Chelsea in February with the hope that they would offer a third year, but as of yet nothing concrete has been agreed.

Ryan Fraser (Bournemouth)

The Scotland international was heavily linked with Arsenal in the summer but the move never materialised. Bournemouth are reportedly keen to offer him a new deal in order to prevent him leaving for nothing at the end of the campaign. The winger scored seven goals and provided 14 assists in the Premier League last term, and will be an attractive proposition to clubs higher up the division given he’s still only 25.

Thomas Meunier (PSG)

The Belgian defender has shown willingness to sign a new deal at PSG but negotiations are yet to start. He is a starter for the Belgian national team and at 28 years old, he’s entering his prime. He’s been linked with Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal. A move to the Premier League would be tempting for him.
